Intro to pine needle basketry

  • IdeaWorks 1002 Southeast 8th Avenue (map)

Discover pine needle basketry! In this hands-on introduction, you’ll learn how to transform foraged Ponderosa pine needles into a small basket.

In this workshop, you’ll learn about the legacy of pine needle construction for containers, including how to identify, gather, prepare, and store needles. You’ll be guided in the basics of coiling, stitching, shaping, and finishing a basket. Create the distinctive spiral pattern and discover how the strands build upon each other to create solid walls of stitched bundles.

This workshop is designed for beginners, and no previous basket-weaving experience is necessary. If you’re interested in connecting with natural materials and traditional basketry, this class is for you. You’ll leave with a small basket started or finished, and the skills to finish and continue creating pine needle baskets on your own.

No prior experience required.
Suitable for ages 16+. Ages 14-15 are welcome to register if accompanied by an adult.
