Skillshare: Dala Horse Carving

  • IdeaWorks 1002 Southeast Yamhill Street Portland, Oregon, 97214 United States (map)

We have partnered with the Nova Scotia-based international folkschool group Life.School.House and use their model for barter-based community education. It costs no money to learn, we just share tea and teaching in an informal and hyggeligt setting.

We will start with a bandsaw blank and go over basic carving techniques using slöyd knives. We will not have time to finish the entire sculpture but you will have everything you need to know to whittle away the hours at home around a cozy fire.

A Dala horse (or dalahäst) is a hand-carved, brightly painted wooden statuette of a horse that serves as a treasured national symbol of Sweden. In the 1700s, lumberjacks and forest workers carved the small horses from wood scraps by candlelight during long winter nights.

Knives will be available for purchase

This month is hosted by Nicholas Maier
