We consider spoons to be the ideal gateway into a huge wealth of traditional woodworking wisdom. Known as green woodworking, you will learn the basics of the entire process of turning a tree into a beautiful utensil you will use the rest of your life. We will cover tools (such as saws, hatchets, sloyd knives, hook knives, etc), how different trees and wood behave (sometimes very badly) and a step-by-step of efficient material removal, carving and finishing.
This class is in partnership with Rewild Portland and is an extension of their free Spoon Club program, every third Sunday of the month.
Taught by local Portland carving legend Leslie Walters, you will be exposed to a wide variety of deep woodworking, historical and ecological knowledge.
For a deep dive into each part of the spoon making process, Skillcraft Institute in partnership with Rewild Portland is offering a 10-month intensive beginning in January, also taught by Leslie.
